In the heart of Aylestone, a vibrant suburb of Leicester, England, lies the spirited Leicester St Andrews Football Club. Known affectionately as "The Drews," this club competes in the Midland League Division One, with a rich history that has endeared them to their local community and beyond.
The journey of The Drews began in earnest in 1985 when they joined Division One of the Leicestershire Senior League. Their talent and determination quickly shone through, earning them a promotion to the Premier Division after just two seasons. Over the years, they have clinched the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division title three times, solidifying their reputation as formidable contenders on the field.
One of the most memorable chapters in The Drews' history unfolded during the 1994–95 season when they battled their way to the 5th round of the FA Vase, a prestigious national competition. This achievement was a testament to their skill and tenacity.
The 2013–14 season was another highlight in the club's storied past. The Drews embarked on an exhilarating FA Vase campaign, vanquishing several Step 5 sides, including impressive away victories against AFC Rushden & Diamonds and East Preston. Their remarkable run led them to a semi-final clash against the highly favored West Auckland.
The semi-final was a gripping two-legged affair. The first leg, a tense goalless draw, set the stage for a dramatic showdown at Canal Street, The Drews' home ground. The return leg drew a record crowd of 1,600 fervent supporters, all eager to witness history in the making. The atmosphere was electric as 26-year-old Leicester native Brady Hickey scored, putting The Drews ahead. The dream seemed within reach, but fate had other plans. In the last 11 minutes, West Auckland struck twice from set pieces, ending The Drews' valiant Vase run.
Though the semi-final ended in heartbreak, the spirit of Leicester St Andrews Football Club remains unbowed. Their legacy is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep connection to their community—a story that continues to inspire and captivate football fans far and wide.
Last time out The Drews shared the points with Bilston Town in a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season. Meanwhile the swans will be looking to bounce back from opening day defeat where they lost to Coventry Copsewood. Both teams will be looking to get all three points.
